Try this website: http://www.bop.gov (Federal Bureau of Prisons website -- if the inmate is incarcerated in a Federal jail, you'll be able to find him/her by using their inmate search function). Most states have similar websites, and the best way to find them is to Google "State of _________ prisons."

Many county jails have websites which list the inmate population. If you know where the individual was arrested, go to the site

Public records for your state. All criminals/inmates have a public record that anybody can access. Also try the jail that they are in, usually their records are public records. You can look up inmates by name.

look in his cell, there aren't many hiding places.

actually, you will need to find out what he/she was convicted for, then that will narrow the prison search down for the state.
There are usually only a few prisons in each state where particular prisoners would be sent. Find a list of the prisons, and search their online database, if they have it (most do)
