I think it was originally slag for smoking opium...

Opium was smoke in loooong pipes - often with dragon motifs on the pipe head - as such when sucking on the pipe you'd be sucking to get the contents of the dragon into your lungs..
When affected yuo'd be likely to subconsuiosly affect your trip with images of dragons because it would be one of the last things you've seen prior to getting wasted.

my neighbours,when i used to catch my wife in bed with other men i would chase her down the street with a baseball bat, and they would say there he goes chasing the dragon.
