...... extending the expiration date till the question finally runs out of all Y!A Time and is automatically "condemned" to a vote? ... Why do you think that maybe so?
Is it because:
1- they are hoping to milk it for all it’s worth?
2- they see them as their brainchildren and cannot abandon them?
3- they cannot make up their minds?
4- they could not detect a single semi-decent response among all the answers offered?
5- they are confused as to which one to pick?
6- they are the same way with money too?
7- they are afraid of offending their on-line buddies by voting for others?
8- they use this as a strategy to keep their captive audience coming back for more torture?
9- they cannot be bothered with it?
10 – they simply do not give a darn?
Or is it:
11- none of the above (and why not?)
12- some of the above (please indicate corresponding numbers)
13- all of the above (be careful the options offered above may or may not be mutually exclusive.)

Okay, who gives a rat's behind about the "points", but don't you think not resolving questions is a sign of disrespect to all those people who took the time to offer heartfelt answers?

Misschatea - Sure, pull my pond-roasted little Frog Leg, why don't you, dear? LOL LOL ;-)
Bitstorm - I agree with your compelling observation/argument, however, please notice I was not taking about "a question, or two", but a definite "pattern of behavior".

12 I'd say 1 is most common reason, 4 is sometimes a reason and occasionally 8 pertains to some people.

You were likely reading my mind here as I was pondering this question as well. I cannot speak for others so cannot answer "how come" but only "why I believe" this phenomenon occurs. Except for rare exceptions I would outright dismiss choices 1 through 8 above. I believe 9 and 10 are frequently true. Some questions are entered here only as a joke at the expense of the "fools" who take the time to answer them. Others are offered only or mainly as a challenge or provocation. In both of these cases the fun, the reward for the questioner is only in the asking. There is no real desire for an answer, therefore no reward in either listening to the answers or choosing one as "Best Answer." Then I suspect there are some questioners who are so prolific in their thoughts and questions that they really have no time for answers. Answers are quite meaningless to them. The thrill is in the chase, in being off to the next question and the next and the next. Some of these individuals may even be well-intentioned. They just tend to lose track of many of their questions because they are overwhelming themselves, not just here on YA but in life in general. And finally, yes, there are the chronic deserters who for one reason or another never actually complete any project in life. Because they don't give a ****? Who can say? Possibly so. Maybe they habitually abandon because they have been abandoned so often in life. Then again, maybe it's just poor protoplasm.

We people with busy lives do have to work. And some times the thrill of the chase is over when you get those that are in your circle answering with really great answers and you just can't pick the one that you really want to be the one answer when you have 100 great answers........( I do recall a friend once did that to me and then did not even pick mine see if that darn Frog gets any great Kisses from me)....A lot of times it's pure gaming as in hop scotch and tic tack toe...LOL Relax and enjoy there you go... Another great answer, bet you another 50 I wont get best answer...
Why don't you come a little closer so I can. No you wont ,,,funny how that is hu~ ya ever notice how high you jump for some then others.....ya I wonder why that is...

I think most people just live for the moment, and want to see their questions get answered, and then once there are no more answers being offered, they forget about it and move on to the next big burning question.
I have to admit, when I first started on here, I was slack about picking best answers. It's a pain to go back through them sometimes, and you feel as though you're missing something good when you're dicking around in your own account trying to tie up loose ends.
I have gotten to the point where I MAKE myself go through and resolve my questions from the day before, and ONLY THEN can I ask more. It's still a big PITA, but hey, I owe it to the great peeps who make my day by answering my questions.

Sometimes there are more sensitive reasons, i have for example a question on cancer and from an ethic standpoint i dont think its right to rate the answers because i'll never know what moved them to answer or what they're going through... It's just inapropriate with an issue like that..

I never do it myself unless I get 50 answers very quickly (which only happens when you ask a question like - Do you like cheese? or something equally meaningless)
My reason for doing that is that I am trying to get 100 answers, maybe others are the same, but I am not going to guess....
Ichi
p.s. it never works anyhoo, I have never got over 100 answers yet!
