It depends where you live. I am assuming you're in the UK since this question comes up on my "UK and Ireland Questions Only" setting. In which case, the answer is a definite NO. I have gotten contraceptive pills through 2 different GP's and a family planning clinic, and I have never needed to do a smear test. Nor has anyone else I know. They take your blood pressure and ask you a few questions, and off you go with your prescription.
OfficeMom and MissA are, I assume from certain words they are using, in America. The system there is very different for women's health. You probably couldn't get the pill at your GP, you would have to go to a Gynaecologists office and they would give you an entire women's health check up, including a smear test, internal exam and whatever else they do, simply because you're sexually active and now at risk of STD's and stuff (and they like doing lots of tests because they can bill you for it, there's no NHS).
In the UK they always keep sexual health and cervical smear matters seperate from contraception- when you get the pill they will advise you to go to the GUM clinic if you have unprotected sex, but it's certainly not a requirement.

It depends on the clinic you go to. A family planning Clinic will ask you how long you have been sexually active and if you have ever had a smear before. They will probably then decide for you. I went on the pill and I had had a smear done 6 months before so they didn't check it again. Hope this helps

It depends. Many doctors will want you to have a full pelvic exam and smear before they will prescribe the pill. Planned Parenthood offers both the pill without a pelvic exam, and the pill + a pelvic exam.
If you are going on the pill because you're planning on becoming sexually active, you should get a Pap test done... and then another one every year thereafter. It's just part of good health for a woman.

I didn't.
In the UK you don't need to have a smear until you are 25. The NHS don't have the funding to do them anymore.
I know this because I went for a GYNE appt yesterday at the hospital and my Gyne Doctor told me this.
I am unsure why you would need one if you are going on the pill. Is this what your doctor said or are you assuming?
If your doctor said that you should then I would take his/her word.
:)

No but if you are sexually active it might be a good idea to have a smear even if you are under 25.

I dont think that it is required for the first year in order to get the medication. But you will need one within a year.
Here is a good site for Q & A's
