I used to know someone who put ketchup on mashed potatoes, and I can see why it's not popular because it looked GROSS.

But it IS good on mash potatoes.

However if you don't like it as much there may be a reason. Chips are in general fried. Mash potatoes are boiled and then have milk, some salt and butter added to them. It may be that you don't like the way the potatoes are cooked.

It's all about dipping!

You have to mash ketchup into mashed potato and pink isn't an appetising look for savoury!

I feel abit of a fraud answering this... I prefer mayonaise with chips!

Not many Americans put ketchup or vinegar on chips. And we prefer fries to mashed potatoes...

Chips taste completely different!!! It's like the cover that was exposed to the oil and salt, and heat, changes it's properties making itself crispy and gorgeous and delicious....

Mashed potatoes are gorgeous too, but the ketchup will blend with it, it's just disgusting.

that's deep man. I would suggest it is to do with the texture - ketchup accompanies the chips well as they are more crunchy and solid, the sensations of differing tastes and textures hit you at slightly different intervals; mash on the other hand is soft and the ketchup taste gets lost somewhere in the, er, mashiness.

But it is; I assume by 'chips' you mean american french fries and not actual potato chips. Ketchup on potato chips is something I've never even heard of someone doing!

Ketchup is good for you. It is also very over baring. When used one can only tastee the ketchup as a rule. So most people that use ketchup do so because they like the taste of ketchup. Just as people that like the tast of salt over salt their food.
