As far as I know, all side-by-sides sold today are all frost-free, and unless you have a very old model, something's wrong.

The most obvious thing to check is your coolant fluid This needs to be done by a pro.

You may have the temp too low. You might also check how well the seal of the gasket is, as this can let in humid air. Some units have a summer/winter setting, to cover excess humidity. If you have an automatic ice maker, you might have a leak in the water line which can also bring more humidity.

You have a problem with the defrost system. It can be one (or two in extreme cases) of the following. 1 Defrost timer. This is a little clock that trips the fridge into the defrost mode. This happens about every 8 hrs for 20 min. 2. Defrost heater. If it's a newer fridge it will more than likely be a glass rod heater. It can be located in the freezer under the coils. 3 Defrost thermostat. This will shut the heater off once it hits a certain temperature (safety measure) Here is what is happening. Your fridge part works off of your freezer. The fan blows the cold air into the fridge compartment. SInce the defrost cycle isn't working properly. The freezer is building up with ice and not allowing the air to reach the fridge compartment. If you manually defrost it (unplugging it) it will work for about two weeks then it will stop cooling properly. If you can locate the defrost timer. (or you can call your local repair shop to find out where it would be located on your fridge. They'll need the make and model number) Remove the cover and take a flat blade screwdriver and slowly turn it until you hear a loud click. If after a few minutes you hear a sizzling sound (water hitting the heater) the problem is your timer. Also look for water in the drain pan. This should happen after about 10 min. If that's the problem it's still a good idea to completely defrost the fridge. The timer is very easy to change and is relatively inexpensive. It's black, and has a plug and is held by two screws. Depending on how handy you are. If it's the heater or defrost thermostat. I'd call someone. If you do change the heater. Do not touch the glass rod with your fingers when installing it. The oil from your hands isn't good for it.

You may have a blocked drain somewhere. Pull out everything and investigate. There's one in the bottom of the refrig section which may be clogged. It leads to a tray underneath the machine that should be pulled out and cleaned....and make sure the drain is completely open to the drain pan.

Also make sure nothing is resting against the freezer back wall. Freezers should be full, but keep things off the walls if possible...some air movement is needed....unlike the Refrig section which works better with very good air flow-don't over load them.

Anyway, if all is clean and draining properly, then the defrosting heater might be bad or the thermostat.

There are usually 2 reasons that this may happen, provided that the condensor coil is clean.

1. The Defrost timer is bad.

2. The defrost radiant heater element is bad.
The timer is an easy replacement, available anywhere they sell appliance parts. The heater, however usually requires extensive disassembly of the freezer compartment.

Can you hear the freezer fan running? If not keep checking that fan because it does run a cycle but if it ne3ver comes on it is the fan causing your problem. Did anyone spill water in the freezer?
Let me know how you make out.

I'd bet that your defrost timer has failed. Most side-by-sides have the defrost timer behind the front grille. Try turning it with a screw driver, clockwise 1/4 turn. If the problem persists,,replace the timer..:-)=
