First time i know the lyric of this beautiful song, i get confused. What's the meaning of Northern Star? What is the relation between the title and the lyric itself?

I always understood it to be her, she is from Northern England, Morrissey has a similar theme in one of his songs "We hate it when our friends become succesful", it goes "and if they're Northern that makes it even worse"
