I am about to apply for a PGCE but I think I need more classroom experience. Is there another way to go about this other than contacting the schools directly as I've been asked for a CRB check but I'm not sure if I can get one on myself or whether an agency has to get one done on me instead. Any tips?

If you have ever had a CRB check in your previous employment i think that should be all you require....best way is to ask them. also the school that would be recruiting you may get this done for you...again ask them if this is possible.

I found this website that provide CRB checks and I think it might be useful. so you might wnat to check it out.

you can apply for classroom assitant from local council's recruitment websites.check out your local councils website.

for example, around a week ago i saw an advert for teachers assitant on southwark council web page...but i am not sure if they require experience.

i hope this helps

You cannot get yourself CRB checked and you do not need to have already been CRB checked to apply for a job. Whoever employs you, whether as a volunteer or paid staff (or even if you are on the committee of such an organisation with no contact with children - if you have anything to do with children, you need to be CRB checked) will do this for you. It is not your responsibility! Indeed, you should be CRB checked every time you start somewhere new! However, the organisation will normally give you a copy of your CRB to keep on file. It needs updating every 3 years if you are in the same job.

With regard to your PGCE application, I suggest you contact the schools directly - especially if you can work as a volunteer! Most will snatch your hand off! They will work with you, helping you to specialise in what you want to teach! However, please understand that (especially with primary schools!), they normally need most help with things like reading with children - but at least it helps with your CV!!! Please note that the organisation will not allow you to be alone with a child until you have been CRB checked.

Hope this helps!

You can only apply for a CRB via an employer or an umbrella body. No individual can apply for one for themselves unfortunately.

Contact the CRB and ask for details of an umbrella body near you and they may be able to help.

In order to get some teaching experience you could join a youth organisation such as the ATC.

Contact your Local Education Authority - they will be able to put the wheels into motion.
