From the word semi, it sounds like it would be a smaller truck, but what is it really?

A semi, also known as a tractor, can not haul a load on it, must have something attached to it to haul the load, hence a trailer. A truck can carry a load on it, by itself.

A semi-trailer truck (colloquially known as an 18-wheeler, semi, tractor trailer or big-rig in the US, as a semi in Australia, US, and Canada, and as an articulated lorry or artic in the UK and Ireland) is an articulated truck consisting of a towing engine (tractor in the US, prime mover in Australia), and a trailer that carries the freight.
