Waitresses are always in demand, there is a high turnover and you never know where there is a job opening. The reason for this is that over 90 percent of job openings are never advertised. Employers just take a person from the list of Resumes they constanly receive. Write up a one page Resume. Don't make it chronological. the first sentences should give the experience and talent you have and what you can offer the restaurant or any other workplace for that matter. An job searcher should think of their Resume as an advertisement, not a Resume. So prepare a one page Resume and keep on distributing to Restaurants. If you leave one at a Restaurant, don't be afraid to leave another one a month later -- someone may have just left. Anyway since 90 percent of jobs are not advertised, the odds are more in your favor by going after the non-advertised jobs and all that takes is preparing and distributing Resumes until you get a job -- it usually happens fairly quickly. Make sure you tell a potential employer when your school hours are. I worked through college too and I had to make it clear there would be NO exceptions in the hours I could work. However, good employees are VERY hard to find, so an employer will want to keep you rather than risk losing you. Say good bye to the jerk you work for. School is far more important. You will get another job just by handing resumes to restaurants or other employers. Tailor your Resume to different employers and remember write it as an advertisement. I used to be an employment counsellor and we call it the spaghetti principal. If you throw a hundred strands of cooked spaghetti at a wall at once, at least one strand is going to stick to the wall (if not more). Try it, I guarantee you will find a job faster this way by fishing were 90 percent of the job openings are. The openings that are advertised represent 10 percent of the job market and most people who don't have enough intestinal fortitude to hand our Resumes at random try the want-ads or the employment services. By the way, once you get your career started in what you are studying for, it is a good way to get a higher paying job or promotion. In the career development class we used to say never stop looking for a job. It's the best way to move up and helps you avoid business closures -- thriving businesses are those who need employees that they will high you with a pay and benefit incentive to move to their company. Most employees feel that employers hold all the cards. The opposite is true, good employees hold all the cards. When I interviewed employers who wanted to hire graduates of our class, they all said the same thing, good employees are extremely difficult to find, some were so desperate to fill a key position that they used to hang outside my door like vultures asking if I would post their job opening to my class because they knew the people taking my class wanted a new job. When negotiating pay and benefits, don't be overly greedy, but don't short sell yourself either. Workers are usually worth more in the job market than they think

Forget working for someone else. Become self employed. This is much easier to do now than it was when I was 17 because of the internet.
Start a garage cleaning business where you work very cheap but get to keep all the stuff that was going to be thrown out. Then sell the stuff on eBay. People will buy anything on eBay. If you are an organized individual with good customer service skills then you can make tons of money with a very flexible schedule doing this.
Then the next time you pass your former boss in the grocery store you can just smile and thank him for doing you the favor by being such a big jerk! lol
