It actually makes sense to me. Australia is a big vacation spot for Americans, but American isn't such a big vacation spot for Australians. A flight to LA would probably have more Americans on it than Australians.
For example, if you go on vacation to Cancun, then you're going to see a lot more Americans on your return flight than you will Mexicans.

Good Question,
I'd say b/c there arent that many Aussies traveling to America.
Someone hit it earlier, a flight leaving from Aruba, Cancun, or Jamaica, headed for Los Angeles will have far more Americans on it then that of the other nationalities.

Coupla reasons -
The show is made by Americans, for Americans, with Americans in front & behind the camera.
Australia is a big tourist place for Americans, while I don't think many Aussies come to the USA for a visit (could be mistaken, I don't have figures in front of me). Therefore, on a plane heading from Australia to LA, I think there would be more citizens of these United States on it, than Australians.

Because the plane was flying to Los Angeles, so there were a lot of Americans on board.

Because if it were about a bunch of Australian survivors it wouldn't be as interesting to those of us who are Americans.
