All the information you need is there - you just need to convert the information into an equation.
"Difference" means subtract, right?
"5 times a number" is 5 multiplied times an unknown number, which is usually shown as an "X".
"4" is given.
"is" means "=".

Put it all together:

5X - 4 = 16

Next step is to solve for "X" by getting all of the known information on the right side of the "=" sign, so:

add "4" to each side of the equation: 5X - 4 + 4 = 16 + 4 so that 5X = 20

Now divide each side of the equation by "5": 5X/5 = 20/5 so that
X = 4

Let

5x- 4 = The difference between 5 times a numbe and 4

16 = Total

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

5x - 4 = 16

5x - 4 + 4 = 16 + 4

5x = 20

5x/5 = 20 /5

x = 4

The answer is x = 4

Insert the x value into the equation

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Check

5x - 4 = 16

5(4) - 4 = 16

20 - 4 = 16

16 = 16

Let x be the number you are looking for.
5x -4=16 [The difference between 5x and 4 is 16]
so 5x = 20 [Add 4 to both sides of equation]
So x = 4 [Divide both sides by 5]

CHECK ANSWER:

5*4 - 4 = 16
20 - 4 = 16
16 = 16 [Answer checks]

5X - 4 = 16
5X + 4 - 4 = 16 + 4
5X = 20
5X / 5 = 20 / 5
X = 4

5 * 4 - 4 = 16
20 - 4 = 16
16 = 16

You have to start doing your own homework!
If you're so confused every time I suggest you talk to your teacher or find a tutor instead of just asking for the answers.
Sorry buddy!

actually, i think everyone is wrong. your equation should be,

abs(5x-4)=16, so your solutions are, 5x-4 = 16, so, x=4
and also,

-(5x-4) = 16, so, x=-4

[where above, abs relates to the absolute value or modulus]
