If you look at the definition of socialism, it does not quite fit today's democrat party. The American Heritage definition of socialism is as follows - Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.
Socialism is more of an economic struction than a political ideology. Strict socialism also allows for collective control over products and that it not a tenet of the democrat party.
Now look at the definition of fascism - A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
This looks more similar to what the democrat party has evolved into. They want a socialist economy and they want to censor any oposition to the liberal media. When they have a majority in either house of congress, they refuse to even allow a vote on most republican bills.

Webster dictionary definition will obviously show the difference but the way both are looked at today there is not really much of a difference.
