My husband’s nieces and nephews are between 6 and 13. Every year I have tried to select nice gifts for their birthdays and Xmas. At first, we used to ask their mom what to get and got it. Sometimes she is frugal about it, and sometimes she has no problem asking us to get $40 gifts. Last Xmas, I got our eldest niece jewelry. I found out she returned it the day after Xmas, after hearing how much she loved it. I found out by accident as the retailer contacted me for card info. Anyway, I understand trying to not hurt our feelings, but I feel my efforts are going unappreciated. And when I tell her what to get my kids—she agrees and then doesn’t do it. And doesn’t tell me…then I find myself having to get gifts I thought my kids were getting. I think gift cards are impersonal, however, I think it is the way to go. The problem is the monetary options. I think $50 is a bit too much. And $25 might seem too cheap since we usually spend about $30-35. Thoughts?

Lil Angel, I come from middle class too, and have been raised to appreciate what we got. My husband's family is similar, except his sister...who married well. The kids on my side of the family get whatever toys, and like them. They cost anywhere from $5-25. This is what I am dealing with--when I asked my sis-law what to get the kids one year, she asked me what price range...i told her $15-20, and she said to get gift cards because older kid toys cost more. For the next 3 yrs, I was determined to prove you can find nice gifts for $20. Then I gave up because my husband would call her, she would tell him what to get. So, I am tired of it. I think I need to stay around $30-35...but most of the stores sell $25 and $50.

Maybe you should get them each 2 $20 gift cards. That way you're not spending quite so much and you don't look cheap. Also, with the cards being to different stores they have more options of what they can buy. To make it more special, a lot of stores sell gift card holders that are cute.

Well, I come from a middle class family and what we do is give the child a dollar for every year example if the child is 11 years-old then they would get $11.00 and all we do is put it in an money envelope, but, from the sounds of it, you all have a lot more to give then I do so I can not offer any more because where I come from it's not how much you give but that you give from your heart, I hope that you do find some good ideas from here but one thing is true in any class of life you could never go wrong with giving money....................................

me, i would never give kids that young gift cards because you hear the parent saying "let me hold it for you and we will go shopping with it later" as the kid will soon find out, later will never come,

what i would do is take the kid(s) shopping with you, find out what their interest are let them pick their own gift, (with limits on price of course, set the limit with them BEFORE you walk in the store) so that next time you will have at least a general idea of what the kid likes/wants

$20 funds sounds genuine, yet cookies are plenty to furnish for Christmas! in my view, i might incredibly decide to get selfmade cookies on my own, (or maybe adorned Christmas cookies from Walmart) incredibly of money! Yum! in basic terms placed them on a incredibly plastic plate, hide with saran wrap and stick a bow on genuine alongside with an quite superb Christmas card (signed Gratefully yours...XXXX and XXXX). If no longer cookies, funds interior a incredibly envelope is extra helpful considering the fact which you're no longer telling them the place to shop with funds. present enjoying cards used continuously circulate over the quantity or are underused wth funds left on the cardboard.

get all a $ 40 card that way they all have the exact same amount to spend and they can not say you are playing favorites and if you bake then get enough tins for each kid and give them homemade cookies or get small tins and hide the cards inside for them to find to make it a surprise
