Well ... most people who break their leg skiing don't also break their neck but it could happen. Same with people who break their legs in falls.

The problem with an injury from an impact is that you really don't have any control over what is going to break.

I suppose if someone hit your leg with a sledge hammer it would only break your leg and you wouldn't risk an injury to any other part of your body.

A fall (or jumping) from more than a few feet can be sufficient to break a leg or other "long" bone such as the ones in the arm or those in the fingers. As long as you don't hit your head in the process, the legs (and possibly the arms) will take the stress and potentially break without breaking the neck or other portions of the spinal column.

There are several types of fractures: open, closed, comminuted, impacted, greenstick, oblique, spiral and transverse. Fracturs can be caused by direct injury....for example an auto bumper impacts a person's femur or a high powered rifle bullet slams into a person's thigh and then femur. It can be caused by an indirect way. This might occur when a bike rider is thrown over the handlebars and braces the fall with an outstretched upper extremity. Kinetic energy is transmitted to the bone and the bone fractures. Hope this helps.

Take a bad fall out of a tree - that should do it.
