I actually felt that way about The Devil Wears Prada. I didn't think it lived up to the hype at all.

I agree with the reader who wasn't as charmed by the recent Harry Potter. They're still great, but they've fallen off a bit since the Goblet of Fire.
I had a whole smattering of disappointments recently. One was The House, I think, it was by 2 horror authors, & ended up being a Christian book. Thanks, but if I wanted to be reborn, I'd have joined the republican party, not hoped to read my way to salvation.
Most recent was "The Interview Room." Can't remember the author's name. It was an experienced, renowned psychiatrist who deals w/psychopaths who is being outsmarted by some 20-yr-old psycho who started studying psychiatry. In fact, I didn't finish it. Didn't even turn to the last pgs to see how it ended.
I made my way through & didn't hate but just don't understand the love everyone has for "the Name of the Rose" by Umberto Ecco.
I was an English major, & like Shakespeare, but ultimate genius status eveyrone gives him? No, people, no.

I recently read 2 books in a row, both quite disappointing. The first was catcher in the rye, which I thought was going to open vast vistas of insight into life for me. I am sorry to say I just couldn't get it!Probably not meant for the likes of me, but all the same, I had to read a synopsis, and review to understand what the hue and cry has been all about all these years!
The 2nd was Agatha Christie's Postern of Faith, which I think is the most boring mystery I have read till date. The only reason I got to the end was beacuse I don't like leaving a book unfinished. But, let me assure you, it was terrible!!

I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, because I know there are a ton of Harry Potter fans out there. I'm one of them.
But I just didn't like the 6th book.
J.K. Rowling is a wonderful writer. She has a very entertaining way with words, and the stories are usually interesting. This last one, though, was a mite disappointing. It was like a prologue to the seventh and final book. It didn't seem like a book in its own right, like the others in the series have heretofore done.
I regret it, but I feel time was wasted.

OMG! I just absolutely hated The Series of Unfortunate Events. I made it through the first one and made the mistake of reading the second one hoping it would be better, but it wasn't.
I don't think I would have even liked it as a kid. The voice is annoying and condescending and the story includes so much that is superfluous. Ok...my rant is over. I expected more, but was very disappointed.

The Oracle by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. It was about the Odyssey (sort of) so I thought I would enjoy it, but it had a unnecessarily violent rape scene, and didn't really go anywhere. By the time I'd finished reading it (and thought "Oh, is that it?"), I wish I'd spent about 7 hours doing something else.
In fact it was so disappointing that if I have meet Signor Manfredi, I think I might have to punch him and I certainly won't be reading any of his other books. .

I read Hemmingway's, A farewell to Arms.

Although there wee some nice details the novel seemed to be really an exercise in style, and quite a tired style at that.

I though it compared badlty to Sassoon or Graves' war novels

I am trawling through Umberto Eco's "Foucalt's Pendulum" at the moment. I'm finding it hard to get inspired by. It is reminding me of the Da Vinci Code, which I really didn't enjoy, but this one is at least better than that. I'm hoping it wll get better, but I'm 200 pages in and there are over 400 left. Oh well, it was recommended to me, so I will stick at it.

I read The Big Bad Wolf by James Patterson, and was very dissapointed because it didn't end. I didn't realize when I started reading it that it was a "to be continued..." book
