The idea was to reclaim the Holy Land from the Moslems who were living there. European Christians sponsored by the Roman Catholic Church wanted to either convert (by force if necessary) or kill off the Moslems living in the region where the Biblical texts take place. This was specifically the cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem but would have included modern-day Iraq and Israel also.
