I've never worked on an 88' with a 4.5 liter. I've always seen that year/make/ model with a 5.0 liter. Anyway....... There are pretty good procedures on the auto-zone site, with exceptions. They don't give you the torq specs. And they don't mention that you need to dip your head bolts in CLEAN oil before re-installing the head. The torq specs for the head should be 130 ft lbs. As with any head start your torq sequence with the center bolt/bolts between the valves, then move to where it comes in contact with the manifold. After you get both center bolt/bolts torqued, do the right side then left side on bolts between the valves, then switch again to where it comes in contact with the manifold do right side bolt, then left side bolt. Repeat this procedure until you have all of your bolts torqued. Working from center between the valves, then the manifold contact, alternating between the two in a right, then left bolt method, bolt by bolt until you have tightened all of the bolts. Make SURE you have your push rods in there proper locations before re-installing.

That's a BIG job, I spent 8 hours just replacing intake gaskets on one of those. Sorry no specs handy.
