The only way I can keep it running is to give it gas at all times. Does anyone know what the problem may be?

I've changed the plugs and wires, but it didn't help. Someone said it could be the timing belt. could this be it?

Actually the most likely problem is also the cheapest to try first.
I would say your fuel filter is probably partially clogged, or clogged enough so that it doesn't supply enough fuel pressure to the engine. I would recommen replacing the fuel filter first. It should be the cheapest thing to try.

If the fuel filter doesn't work, then I'd check the fuel pressure to determine if the fuel pump was supplying enough pressure, if it is supplying enough pressure, then check the fuel injectors. If it's not supplying enough pressure, the fuel pump may have a clog in it or is worn or the fuel pressure regulator is not working properly.

I'd check in that order from cheapest to more expensive.

If the car will stay running when you give it gas, it is definitely NOT the timing belt. It couldn't hurt to replace it if you have never done so (it is due if you've never changed it). But it's NOT the timing belt.

Feel free to send me an e-mail (by clicking on my name) if you need more information.

This is a failry common problem. My money is on your fuel injection. Have that checked out. Their might be a problem with a sensor or the car's computer. Since the sensor isn't working well, then the car shuts down. But when you gas it, the RPMs go up and the car keeps running. It shouldn't be too expensive, but don't take it to any garage, try to take it to a reputable place.

I can tell you right from the start with experience in that type of stuff, you need a complete fuel systems cleaning including the injectors.

could be a number of reasons fuel filter, fuel pressure, mositure in the distributor, plugs might not all be firing.
Start with the simple things first.
