Any one that's cheap, colorful, and has a gig or so of memory. I'd say a FLASH one (usually smaller; it's a different type of memory storage) vs. one with a micro hard drive (like the iPod) since a flash drive would be more resistant to being dropped or banged on stuff.

The life-span of an iPod in the hands of a 12 year old is real short unless it is kept at home. Thieves target iPods. Small enough to conceal yet a big price tag to make them lucrative.
RCA makes a decent mp3 player that supports music only. At around $40 USD it is a cheap purchase yet a reliable device. It comes with only 512MB but has a slot for SD cards. This can easily expand the memory capacity to 1.5GB. That's more than enough memory plus your kid can carry an extra card around if more memory is desired.
I'm happy with mine.

a cheap 1GB max memory player that has only music support and nothing else. Kidding... It does NOT matter. But do not get an MP3 player like an ipod to show off. Trust me they get stolen.

I think iPods are great. They're extremely easy to use and they still have a high "coolness" factor. You can get an iPod mini from Apple's Outlet store for $99. It's refurbished but it still comes with a one year warranty. I just bought one and it looks like new!

Have him go to a store and pick something that he wants. Put a spending limit (like $150, example) and he will pick his favorite.
But 1GB should do the trick.
