The public wants films that are fun to watch, but when Oscar comes around, they choose films that are more cerebral and "meaningful"

One notable exception, "The Return of the King"

Because they're not the kind of movies today's generation seem to be interested in. Young people today seem to lean more to action, sex and basically the kind of movies that have no sorta message out there. Maybe thats judging them a bit harsh but I've found that it has truth in it. I think the older folks are the ones that are more interested in the oscar type movies because they generally have more meaning to life and most often some relate to it. Besides the young people are in majority compared to the older people.

What do you mean? Some do... some don't!

These did well: -

Gandhi
Schindlers List
Sound of Music
Chariots of Fire
American Beauty
Shakespeare in Love
Godfather I + II
Forrest Gump
Platoon
Deer Hunter
Rocky
Gladiator
and of course 2 of the highest grossing movies of all time

Titanic and Return of the King!

Perhaps if you specify the particular films to which you believe this hypothesis applies and then we will be able to help you a little.

Being a box office hit is all about how much publicity and promotion a movie gets. It will all depend on you as a discerning moviegoer which movies you will actually go to.

Because the critics and us common folk never have the same taste. It also seems like, in my area anyway, that a lot of the highly acclaimed films don't get released nationwide.
