I think the idea has some merit, as long as people are allowed the option of abstaining or spoiling their ballot paper.

My primary concern though is making sure that people make an informed choice, I think that is at least as important as increasing turnout. I think compulsory voting would only exacerbate the problem of uninformed voting, unless you make people sit through presentations from all the candidates on the ballot paper and then pass a test afterwards...let's face it, that ain't ever gonna happen.

Compulsory voting would create a type of black market for votes. Would that vote have any real moral value?

Its like having compulsory military membership. The ranks fill up with clowns who dont want to be there. Taxes would have to be raised again.

People have a private vote so why should it be compulsory ?
You don't do something you don't want to do like voting for a bad
candidate or government, there again if you don't vote you may be the persone who lets a bad government into power.
thats your choice.

no, i don't want idiots deciding on the new government.

After all the people who currently do vote do so because they agree with the policies of the party they vote for or they disagree with the other parties.

If the vote was made compulsory the party that wins could win due to it's populist views and not whats good for the country in the long term.

I live in a country where voting is compulsory, if you live in a true democracy it should be your choice whether you vote or not.Personally I would still vote as I believe that at least if the party of my choice loses at least I tried to make a difference. As opposed to the people who don't vote & then complain about the goverment that they got.

If it were compulsory then it wouldn't be a democratic society would it. We currently have freedom of choice to choose who we vote for and if we want to vote. To force people to vote is a dictatorship. So no we shouldn't.

To compel people to vote would accomplish very little, I think. I'd like to think if you take the time to vote, you have some sense of the democratic principles this country is based on and an interest in the way this country is governed. Think of a dozen bozos you know, folks who don't have a clue who their senator is, who Cheney is, who think Iraq is somewhere near Norway, who really don't give a damn. I'd rather they didn't vote at all. Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, those of us who vote, think about what is best for the country. We may disagree but we think.

I would not like to be told I have to vote it should be a free choice but it should also be remembered there are a lot of countries where they do not get a vote and also a lot of people have died just to get a vote.
There is no point standing at the bar in the pub or sitting watching the television and complaining about new laws etc. if you don't bother to vote. If you are not happy about the politicians policies get involved and do something about it.
