I owned both, so I hope this info is helpful:
A bi-level home is a two level home (hence the prefix "bi", or two, such as in bi-monthly or bi-annual). In these homes you usually walk up a small set of steps to get to the front door. Once inside the front door you are on a "landing" between the first and second floors. From here you can go up or down. In a bi-level home, the "upstairs" rooms are generally the LR, DR, Kitchen and most BRs. The "downstairs" rooms are generally the family room and additional BRs. Most bi-levels have a one or two car garage that is "under" the upper level, and accessed via the lower level. These homes do not have basements and are built on a slab. Next to a ranch style home, this is the least expensive to purchase and gives you the biggest bang for your buck.
A traditional split level home is basically a "colonial" style home, but built using 3 or 4 levels, rather than just two. I've seen lots of variations in a split, but the most common is the entry hall, DR, & kitchen on street level, the family room a few steps down from there, the LR up one-half a level, and the bedrooms on another level. Thes homes usually have basements and a one or two car garage accessed thru the main level. These are my favorite style of home because there are so may interesting variations.
Good luck.

The entrance to a bilevel is halfway between floors 1 & 2. The splits entrance can be anywhere, but it has 2-3 floors that are seperated by about 4 feet in height. Such as you enter the left side at ground level, but you want to go to rooms on the rightside, you would go up or down the stairs about 4 feet to access the other stories.

A split level home is a house with at least two short sets of stairs. The house in Napolean Dynamite ia split level. A duplex is a dwelling where two separate families reside separately. Think of it as a building with two only apartments.

a split level home will have a ground level entry, which is usually used for a family room, then there will be 3-4 stairs leading to a "sunken" living room. in a bi-level home there will be stairs immediately as you enter the home, one set leading down, another set leading up. i've lived in both kinds of homes, and i have a parent that works in real estate.
