because you play an odd number of a differance in games. Say you played 20 games and won 15 and the second place team won 15 also in 21 games you would be up a 1/2 a game.

You can be a half a game behind if one team has played an odd number of games and another team has played an even number.
The half game is for the game difference and at the end of the season, assuming it's MLB, everyone should have played 162 games. So, it works like this:
Team A has a 30 win 20 loss record
Team B has a 29 win 20 loss record
Team A has a half a game lead on team B. When team B plays that odd game, they will either be tied with A or be a full game back.

Ah, but there's a beauty part.
If Team A has a 29 - 20 record and Team B has a 28 - 19 record, then they are tied in terms of games ahead or behind. But Team A is behind in winning percentage (.592) while the winning percentage for Team B is .596. So Team A is zero games back but back in winning percent.

Gotta love baseball!

If you've played one more or one fewer game than the other team, that translates to half a game in the standings. For example, if the Blue Jays are 50-46 and the Orioles are 51-46, the Orioles are only a half game ahead of the Blue Jays. Depending on whether the Jays win or lose their next game (and assuming the Orioles have the night off), they'll either tie the Orioles or be a full game behind.

If one team is 10-0 and another is 8-1, one team has played 1 less game than the other team...therefore, it's counted in 1/2 of a game.

If a team was 20-2 and another team was 20-1, the 2nd team would be 1/2 game out...because they have played less games than the team ahead of them.

it goes by won lost record for instance let's say that the st.louis cardinals are 88-61 and the houston astros are 88-62 the houston astros are half a game back because they have 1 more loss then the cardinals do now lets say the cardinals are 89-61 and the astros are 88-61 then the astros are still a half game behind st.louis because the cardinals have 1 more win then the astros i hope this helps you
