I've been riding off and on since I was 10, I'm now 33. I actually had an Arabian 8 years ago but it was a disaster. He had an awful disposition and I wasn't experienced enough for him! I'm an okay rider and still have alot to learn. I'm also kind of nervous on a horse since I've been thrown so many times! I know they can sense nervousness. I want a horse that isn't very large, I'm 5'8 and130 lbs. I also want a pretty horse preferably dark bay or black. I don't like the boring brown colors. I know I should go more by personality but I want to get a horse that I think is beautiful as well as gentle and sweet! I also don't want to pay more than $1500, I don't mind an older horse to save money. I would use it mostly for trail riding. I also was thinking about leasing a horse. How does this work and what does it usually cost? Thanks for the help!

I'm a trail rider and I prefer Quarter horses. They usually have a good disposition and are good working horses. Any horse can be hot or rammy. Arabians are preferred for their high spirit. Although we had an arab stud horse that was so mellow it was amazing.I would start with disposition, size, and color. Then hang around horse barns meet people that are in the horse business and watch how their horses work. DON"T go to an auction barn , lord have mercy. Get to know a local farrier and get his opinion on some local horses for sale. Take your time and you will find the rite horse. When you think you found a good one ride it a few times, if you can observe it with other horses socially do that to. I know a lady that purchased a horse on its looks once , had it for 2 years and could never ride it. Leasing a horse is vary expensive I wouldn't recommend it. Take your time look around and you will find the rite horse. Your price of 1500$ is a little low but it can be done take your time.

Quater horses have nice tempermants but so do many other breeds,
What you are looking for is something commonly called "bomb proof or kid broke" nothing green or not anything that they say needs an experienced rider.
Do not pick a horse by breed or color go by the horses personality and tempermant.
Test ride the horse. Get on and ride away fro mthe property where he is kept. See how he reacts. Saddle him yourself and unsaddle him also to see how well he behaves.
Leasing can be a great option. If you have stables in your area see if they have any for lease. It works out well and lets you try and see how you like it. The expense part is different with each lease arangement.

American Quarter horse. I am not a "horse person", but my daughter is a barrel rider and trial rider and she just loves the Quarter horse because they are so versitle and easy. She is 16 and only 5'0" 130 pounds and the one horse she rides is 17 hands. She has been exposed to other breeds but doesnt like any of them as much and has told me they can be kind of flaky or nutty. They come in lots of colors too and she has never met a quaterhorse she didnt like, I guess they are really smart and affectionate and stuff. Smash sees her coming and will come all the way up from the back of the field to nuzzle her, follows her around like a dog. He waits till she turns her back and rubs his head up and down her back... or I swear he will purposefully get a mouth full of water and drop it on her head when they are playing or she is filling his buckets. He has a great personality! Check out the AQHA online. The Quarter horse congress was just in Columbus Ohio and people litterally come from all over the world to attend. Its a lot of fun and the people are all very nice.

Not an arabian, definately not an arabian. Most of them usually have horrible dispositions, aka, dingbats! Quarter Horses usually have a nice sweet temperment. stay away from appaloosa's too, theyre right down there with an arabian. even though i mentioned quarter horses, my preference is a thoroughbred, but thats because i enjoy eventing, and thoroughbreds are very versatile for that sport.

you can find local horses in your area, by going to equinehits.com they have prices, and alot of imformation on the horses people have for sale. Also, from experiance and knowledge.. paint or appaloosa horses are really docile horses. & they are very flashy looking. But do try that website, it's really great for finding horses near you!
