Good question. I don't think anyone really knows what the future holds for IT and the people in IT. I think it's going to be the one thing that takes us to the outer limits. After all IT has taken us this far why stop now.

Shrinking authority and usefulness. As computers get more powerful and capable, there is less need for IT people. That's why IT types prefer Windows: security issues and a clumsy, dumbed down interface that makes it difficult for the average user to add hardware or software or do anything out of the ordinary make for reasonable job security.
As Mac OS X and Linux gain market share, Windows will be forced to improve, and many IT jobs will disappear. We're already seeing the first wave of this as many IT support jobs are now outsourced to places like India. The next wave will have fewer support positions - even in India - followed by fewer companies writing their own code. Proprietary, internally generated code is the last thing tying companies down to expensive-to-maintain legacy Windows systems.

Amazingly good technology getting better all the time.
Users will remain the weakest link in the chain and will use the capabilities of the most amazing communication system ever developed to ask one another incredibly inane questions and to answer them.
Once we reach the singularity and the machines take over they will crush us like bugs and sometimes I don't blame them.
