Aren't there any orphaned kids in America to adopt? Maybe that doesn't gain as much publicity...

What ever happened to the saying: Think Globaly - Act Locally

Not saying it's not a worthy cause...not saying that it's wrong, I just wonder what compels these "stars" to clean up other neighborhoods without cleaning up their own 'back yard' first ( must be fashionability or publicity).

She could have bought the WHOLE orphanage with what she spent on, say, bleaching her hair last year.

By the way, England has orphans, too, and poor, hungry people, and homeless...

I hear ya. You feel half guilty giving a dirty thought to someone who is adopting a child (foreign or not). But it's true, there are so many needy, lonely children in our own countries too that are being provided for by our government, that ultimatly we pay for in the end. So why not look there for adoption purposed. But it is a individual decision, sooooo be it.

This answer doesn't apply specifically to Madonna, but I think there are a few reasons that people prefer to adopt internationally than from within the U.S.

One is the fear of the birth parents (if they're still alive) in the U.S. trying to take back the child. Many times American kids are up for adoption because the courts have taken away their parents' parental rights. I'd feel uneasy trying to raise a child if his possibly unstable parent(s) were in my state. Recently a social worker was murdered while supervising a visit between a child and a birth parent. Sometimes in order to adopt in the U.S., you have to agree to let a child stay in touch with siblings or grandparents. These relatives could reveal your child's location to the child's biological parents.

Another reason some people have for international adoption is the type of abuse suffered by the children. In some foreign countries with good orphanages, the children may experience "only" hunger, malnutrition, and poor hygiene. But in the U.S., the children up for adoption through the state have almost certainly experienced emotional, physical, sexual abuse, or exposure to drug abuse. I myself could deal with the international kids' set of problems a lot more easily than the American kids' problems. I'm glad there are strong, patient people who can parent children who have suffered physical and sexual abuse. God bless them and the kids.

Orphaned kids in America have lives of gold compared to orphaned children in developing countries. Don't be so selfish.

She is an old has-been who saw an opportunity to get her name in the headlines.

The sad thing is that while the kid will probably want for nothing physically, he will be raised by someone with a few screws loose.

A needy child is a needy child. Does it really matter what country they're from? And FYI.....Madonna may be American, but her husband is not. They live in England, not the USA.
