it is said that it is required for cell phone manufactures to have the sound on. this is to prevent whoever to take pictures of people.. like the first poster said.. upskirt... so it is..impossible.. unless you actually go thru the trouble of hacking your own phone..

Usually when you turn all sound off (phone in "silent" mode) the shutter sound is gone as well. Other than that you cannot turn it off.
So, if you want to take pics without any sound, your first have to "silent" your phone (long press on the # key on the far bottom right).

some cell phones have a specific option for the shutter sound, however, with with privacy concerns these things raised, it's getting harder and harder to silence camera-phones. for example...my last two camera phones had sound options for the shutter sound..including silent, my sidekick two doesn't, the phone has to be in total silent mode, the shutter sound doesn't even follow volume options, and some newer phones it's locked on regardless of phone options.
