I seem to remember hearing (from a few sources) that hamsters are more prone to biting; also, it seems to be more difficult to keep two hamsters together (regardless of gender) than it is to keep two (female) mice. I've had mice for years, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Boy mice don't get along with each other, but females have great disposition, and are easy to keep in groups. In small numbers, they don't smell (as long as their living quarters are kept clean), and get very tame with regular handling. I also think they're much cuter than hamsters, but this is just my personal preference. I love how acrobatic mice are, I don't think hamsters are quite as acrobatic.

I would get one hamster, not two. Hamsters can be very cuddly, however, female hamsters need much much more space than males and are more aggressive. From my experience, I would actually recommend one male hamster. Reason, I had a female hamster in a HUGE habitrail set up. It had six different levels and tubes and little lofts spaces. Still, she kept trying to escape (and succeeded many times. When she died, I got a male hamster, he was totally happy in one little area with his wheel so I scaled down the habitrail and it was so much easier to clean up. When I did research, I learned that females need more space and bite more. It's true, she bit me all of the time when the male never bit me. I think mice are creepy, like mini rats.

I don't know if this is an idea you would be open to or not, but My wife and I have had rats, and they were great pets. We got a pair of dumbo rats, which are slightly smaller than normal but with bigger ears. They were very affectionate and clean animals, and as far as I know they are a lot smarter than either hamsters or mice. Plus, rats live 2-4 years on average, and mice might live a year, so once you grow attached to them they will be around a lot longer. Just a thought.

I would choose a hamster. While they are both cute, I think a hamster is so much cuter...and the hamster we used to have, sometimes he looked like a mouse! They're both great, but I would choose hamster.

I would go with the mice! Hamsters are very smelly and they like to bite. Mice have very little odor and when they do bite which is not often,it doesn't hurt much. I have had both and I have to say mice make great pets.

personally i would choose rats, they make affectionate pets, but out of the two, it depends on how much time you will have to spend with them, mice you cant really hold , hamsters like to be held. rats prefer to be with you and not in the cage.
