Opening you're mouth stiffens the facial muscles, preventing you form twitching and poking the mascara wand in you're eye. It also opens the eye area up more (because the muscle pull down and away) leaving you with more space to work with and preventing you form getting mascara all over you're eyelids.
Over all it's just a way to hold you're face still while putting on the make up.
Hope this helps.

It is so your eyes open wider and you can apply the mascara starting at the root for more length, jiggle the brush slightly from side to side as so slide the brush to the ends.

I dont but I do pull a weird face and have to look down into the mirror at myself to do it! Everyone opens their mouth or pulls a face dont they- theyre usually hilarious as well, I remember my young history teacher at our all girls convent school asking us why women did that as he had noticed his wife doing it that morning lol

Julie why not try applying it yourself? First with your mouth open then with your mouth shut and you'll be sure to find out.

Your sure to be lost for words either way.
