I do not think there was a way to poll slave owners. I would guess perhaps less than 3%.The plantation owners owned the majority and they as well were in politics as always it's who has the money and power, so when the North pushed the slave issue guess who voted for secession?

well america wasnt the only country who owned slaves, every country at one point in time had slaves. black white yellow, all the same thing, a slave is a slave no matter what color the person. ever heard of indentured slavery? people would sell themselves into slavery so the slave owner would pay off their debts.

A very small percentage as it w.as being phased out but then the civil war wasn't about slavery

I don't know the percentage, but you had to be"rich" amd a land owner most likely.

Most slave owners were not US citizens they were the rich of other counrtys
