My 10 year old has been asking a series of questions on this subject recently and I just answer the specific question. She is obviously having trouble sorting it out in her mind. She understood about "the birds and the bees" but this puzzles her more.

I think that all the kids need to know is that there is love between the two adults, and with it mutual respect - I mean, with genuine love comes genuine respect, right? The kids will figure out the sex bits when they are old enough to want to know about sex anyway, at age 6 they are only really interested in knowing how THEY are made (i.e. heterosexual sex as relevant to procreation), and not really how adults pleasure each other. I think you're right, and that your boss doesn't realise how information can be imparted to children in an appropriate manner.

I happen to think adult comedy shows are inappropriate for children, no matter if I like the show or not, which I do in this case. I think tv in general is bad for kids, and didn't allow my younger kids to watch much other than public children's programs like Sesame Street, the Letter People and Mr. Rogers. I would consider a 6yr old a younger child.
But since you let her watch it, its too late for that this time, and I think you explained it very well in terms that a 6yr old can understand.
Your boss is using magical thinking about innocence. I'm betting his/her kids has been exposed to the daily news and if that doesn't shred innocence, I don't know what would.

Children do not form any social preconceptions about what is wrong until they go through puberty and are hit by peer pressure at school. They may know what is right and wrong from family, but love does not really mean much until they understand the sex, which does not happen until later. To them love is an attachment to someone, someone they cannot do without, and they are either happy when they are with that person, or sad when they go away. There is nothing wrong with them knowing that two men or two women can love each other. They will probably not understand it. It will however let them understand when they grow up that it is acceptable for people of the same sex to love each other, instead of thinking that it is wrong.

I just think that for the better good of humans, heterosexual relationships should be encouraged more than gay (same-sex) ones.
In other words, our genes have to keep mixing up so that we become a stronger, more diverse and more capable of acheiving better things for the whole planet.
As history has told us, when trying to go against nature or even tempering with it - as it's the case for cloning (that's a totally different debate but I thought I'd mention it here just for the sake of it), as all men have sperm and all women have wombs, give or take the 'point-zero' or something percentage of unfortunate infertile & 'inerectile' bunch, the results for the majority can only be adversive.

According to Parentline Plus,if a child is old enough and aware enough to ask a question on a particular matter, you should answer them as honestly and as simply as possible. This in no way corrupts the child. As for the people that thinks it does-what do you intend to do? Shut them away from the world their whole lives?

I think you did well. I think that when young children ask questions like that its better for someone they love and trust to be the one to answer it, rather than hear something that is in appropriate from someone else...its an extremely cruel world out there, we have to protect our kids from getting the wrong idea on this subject. Yes it might be unnatural to some, but its life...we are all human after all..........

Innocence, yeah right. Ok, everyone has the right to his/her opinion. But it is your child and if you have followed your heart, then you did the right thing. Anyway a kid of 6 is smart enough to pick this up (with stereotypes and prejudices) out of your home. I guess it is better to equip a kid with a 'weapon of wisdom and understanding' before they get influenced. Let a kid have, build his/her own opinion before they get mislead.

I think the world is changing and gay people are more understood today and more accepted. I also think that it is good to explain gay to your children if they ask. It may also help if you explain it to them rather than them calling it to others at school and not knowing what it mines. Or it getting called to them.

I'm not sure as we parents are not always right, hey sometimes we hope for the best!!
I have a 13yr old and a 10yr old and when they have approched me asking questions about all sorts of things!! it is a good a time as any to answer them, i just try to be as honest as i can,in a way they could understand, i don't see the point in lying.
I would have done the same thing as you ,what's the point in saying otherwise? she could walk down the street and see a couple holding hands today , you have to have a answer.
I would not worry about what your boss said, it's a very diffrent world these days!!!
Good luck and don't worry, my kids are fine and secure.
