The full name of compact drive is compact disk Read Only Memory Drive or in short CDROM drive . Here a disk is placed just like an olden days gramaphone record and data is written onto the disk. Once this data is written it cannot be erased and it can be only read again & again and hence it is called as Read Only Drive. Ofcourse due to price competition the manufacturers have developed two type of drives one that will read the disk only and another that will both read & write the disk. Here also the disk can be written only once but once again the technology has made it possible to create a disk that can be written & erased & rewritten this is known as CD R/W . Further the CD is a removable drive where as the hard disk is a fixed disk drive and both the disk & the drive components are jointly fixed together.as a single piece. The hard disk resembles the tape concept to a certain extent. That is it is a magnetic media and electronically the data gets stored and this can be erased and again written any number of times. The hard disk is a time tested one and is reigning the computers from 1980 onwards and still it is the leader the only thing being the capacity & the speed are getting increased day by day.

A compact drive is usually a CD Drive which is a drive that runs a single insertable disk that is for reading or writing. A hard didk drive is where your operating system, files, folders are stored on a enclosed device that holds multiple disk called platters which has multiple read/write arms that store the info onto the platters. A hard drive holds from a few hundred megabytes if it is real old to 500 gigabytes of information. A CD disk holds 700 megabytes and a DVD disk holds normally 4.7 Gigabytes. You do not put an operating system on a CD drive to run a computer..hope this helps..

Very briefly, A hard disk drive (HDD, also formerly known as a fixed disk drive) is a digitally encoded non-volatile storage device which stores data on rapidly rotating disks with magnetic surfaces (hard disk platters).
Hard disks were originally developed for use with computers. In the 21st century, applications for hard disk drives have expanded beyond computers to include video recorders, audio players, digital organizers, and digital cameras.
The compact disk is a disk that you buy to download information on to include music, etc. You can download onto it.. you can change it... you can delete it, etc.. The particular drive is built into your computer for compact disks just as another drive is there for your DVDs

The term "compact drive" could mean a couple of things.
Compact drive could mean Compact Flash Drive (or any member of this family: SD, MMC, etc), this is more commonly know as a USB stick, USB pen, etc ( http://www.usbflashdrive.org/ ). This is a removable/portable storage medium that is more reliable then floppy disc's. And can be used in a varity of things like PC's, laptop's, camera's, MP3 & 4 players, etc.
However compact drive technology (http://tomshardware.co.uk/2005/03/23/miniature_disk_drive/) is the term used for making mini hard disk drives for use in iPOD's, Laptops, PDA's, etc.
For the definition of the hard disk drive see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk
Hope this helps.
