i used to be a shy and quiet person but have opened up and become extroverted. however, i feel that i would rather go back to being shy and quiet. sometimes (or many a time), i feel the need to keep to myself and be more reserved and restrict myself from opening up and sharing my views. while at other times, i can talk non stop about my feelings without boundaries but later come to regret that i talked too much. i'm confused, why do i feel this way? am i meant to be a quiet (and maybe boring) person with no personality?

is being shy and quiet (or boring) a personality too? i am extroverted to the extent that when i keep quiet, my friends think i'm in a bad mood when i am just trying to hold my tongue.

You sound like me and I was diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. Maybe you should talk to your doctor about referring you to a psychiatrist because without further info into your background and other traits its hard to pinpoint what the problem could be. I took psychology in university but that HARDLY makes me a reliable source for diagnosis.

Be honest. Even when you try to joke and open up to people, you know that there is a part of you that is still private, which you'd rather not share.
I think all that extrovert thing is a mask you put on because people expected that of you.
If I were you, I'd try to find some genuine friends who know that even silence is golden between true friends.

This is entirely my opinion. If you still feel you need to see a doctor, go ahead. Only those folks can really tell you stuff.

Hello, "You need Lithium baby" guy, Lithium causes nerve damage and the psychiatrists these days are prescribing other anti-psychotics. If you want to be a fake armchair doctor, atleast keep up with the latest advances.

I'm Bipolar II and I agree with the others who feel this is what you may have. A good mood stabilizer such as lithium or one of the newer ones will control the symptoms. The nonstop talking without boundaries etc is hypomania. Think about other times in your life when you've felt depressed or withdrawn from people and that's the depression part of the illness.

I feel the exact same way. Sometimes I can be really shy and quiet and other times I can be really talkative. For me it really just depends on my mood. But yeah I started thinking the same thing that I might have a multiple personality disorder but I dont think you would really know if you had it well thats just my opinion anyway.

because you came out of your shell and you have a personality. you are who you are. it's not multiple personality. we all have different facets to our personality. be you.
