With search engines like google, you have to pay an advertising fee, unless you have signed up on a free site that gives you free advertising. On my forum (which you can find in my profile), you can sign up with that server and it doesn't cost you a cent. You can also choose many places to advertise your site, including google and Yahoo, but I've found that it's actually pretty hard to find it when you search for it, even when using the key words that you have put in.

once you have made a site you have to pay google or ask etc. money to put your site into their database
For example, the first site that comes up, for when you type in "cars" is probably paying over a million dollars to be the top spot on google.
