There may be many reasons for this problem. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

Is it possible you've got SATA hard drive(s) instead of PATA ("standard" IDE)? If that's the case, then you need to either find the driver disk that came with the controller, or download a driver from the Internet (since your existing OS appears to be working, you should be able to get the model in Device Manager/SCSI or RAID devices). Then, when you start the XP install, hit F6 when it first starts booting from the disk (you'll see a note at the bottom, "Hit f6 to specify additional boot devices"). Then, when prompted, put in your floppy disk with the driver and you should be able to see the hard drive.

Yeah there is, restart the computer and save urgent "F8" or "Esc" key(its different for various pcs) this would take you to a blue or black show. There must be a boot option (or some component like this) elect that and chosen CD ROM because the first boot, save settings and restart the computer even as having XP contained in the CD rom. once you re-sart the computer there must be a black show the position it says "Press any key besides from cd...." press any key and follow the options.

check whether your bus settings are correct in the system.
While booting press "Del" and go to the second option and see whether harddisk is detected or not. If not just check the databus and power is connected to harddisk.
