The other day I held the door open for a woman and she started to shout at me and call me sexist and say "I don’t need a man to open a door for me". Was I in the wrong or was this woman just an ignorant feminist.
(I open the door for men and women out of courtesy)

I have had this happen, I work in an office block which has numerous doors. It is just polite for someone to hold the door open, sometimes it is easier if you have to pull the door towards you. It doesn't matter whether they are men or women.
You should have replied "oh are you a woman, sorry I didn't realise?"
I think it is only the odd woman who would do that, so I shouldn't lose sleep over it, she is obviously barking mad

Swink, I too hold the door open for both men and women. Most people see this as plain and simple courtesy, but SOME women are so far up their own a**e that they can't see it as just that.

SOME women think that because you don't let the door slam into in their faces that your suppressing their own freedom to demonstrate that they are just as capable at opening doors as all the evil horrible men in the world - but don't let this minority of moronic females spoil it for everyone else - I'm sure most women out there appreciate not getting doors in the face, even though we can all open doors just as well as eachother.

I personally like being treated like a woman, the old fashioned...lol...way. There's nothing wrong with common courtesy or respect. I think we have lost some of that. Equal rights doesn't have to mean equal rudeness. I hope we can teach our children to do the right thing, not the politically correct thing. Glad to hear you still open doors!

Wow! I'm sorry you encountered someone like this. She was probably just a die-hard feminist. I'm from the south, and believe it or not, some girls I know won't walk through a door if there's a man present to open it for her. Just keep opening doors for women, and someday you'll find one that will appreciate it. If not, you can move down south where your efforts won't go unnoticed. :)

Ignorant feminist.... and a rude one at that. A true gentleman will hold the door for either a man or woman, just out of politeness. Not everything is a feminist issue. She should have just said thank you and smiled.

And in case you ever opened a door for me, and I forgot to say thanks... thank you lol.

i think there is something seriously wrong with her. i'm female and i hold the door open for people whenever i happen to be about to close one into someone's face. it could be worse, i once had a woman shout at me for failing to notice that she was walking (some distance) behind me when i closed a door.

you should have slammed it shut in her face, by the way

I'm all for women's rights. However, I appreciate common courtesy. There is a difference. Now a days it's hard to find a true gentleman or anyone with decent manners. Some women (like this one) use the whole "feminist" thing to cover up their own insecurities or use it as a power trip...Don't pay attention to her and don't let her change your nice ways. :)

Don't let some lady with serious issues get in your way of being kind and courteous to other people. Trust me having someone yelling at you and calling you names because you opened a door for them does not happen often...

...and I would certainly hope not...

Lol

You were so not in the wrong and next time this happens, just let the lady yell and make a fool of herself while you stand there innocently. =)

Lol, everyone will look at her like she's nuts and feel sorry for you. Trust me, not a lot of people agree with that kind of behavior as you could probably tell by the number of people who responded and said you didn't do anything wrong. =)

She was more than overly-sensitive that day. I taught my son when he was little, if anyone is going through a door at the same time as you, hold it for them (man, woman, or child). It's just a nice courtesy to another human being. I would have said, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but I hold the door for everyone!"

How rude of her! You were just being polite and a simple 'thank you' would have been the appropriate response. I hold the door for people of all ages and both sexes and have never been shouted at like that, but have been ignored many times! I usually just shout after them "no, it's quite alright, that's my job!"
