Vedic Culture is based on Cow Protection. In Varnasrama System, one can simple survive if one has cow and Land. So at the time or Rama in Treta Yuga, and even at the time of Krishna in Dwapar Yuga, all over the world there where many cows, and surplus supply of Milk, Curd, Butter and Ghee.
Ghee being the best for serving the lord, was used to light the Lamps. Real Richness was measured on how many cow one had, and how much Land.
But in Kaliyuga, People tend to exploit every thing and hence things are taken away from them. People are made to satisfy with a Loaned House, in a big building, with no garden or even sunlight coming in the house. The wealth is just “printed paper with Politicians Promise” or “numbers in a Bank account”. People even have to purchase water.
People are more interested in eating Cow, rather than the milk or Ghee. Children Grow on Powder milk. And people don’t have even strength to enjoy Butter or Ghee. So Ghee loosing its demand has become costly and people have to satisfy with Oil.
But if you can afford, then its best to light ghee Lamps to welcome Lord. Most Oils gives out bad smell when burnt where as ghee gives a Satvik fragrance.

While Rama Came to the earth the Yuga was the Kretha Yuga so every body at that time need to use the ghee for the lightings and also for other thing because that is the practical usage for that time because the dharma was so good so that inorder to determine the stage @ what the dharma was the ghee was used as the Dharma was gone to the stage how the oil looks like and turn likes the character of oil in this KaliYuga

Diwali is celebrated for various reasons. They are - Rama's return, Lakshmi Puja, festival of Lights, Naraka Chathurdasi, Kali Puja etc., People celebrate this according to their capacity and liking by lightning lamps, decorating with lights, playing crackers etc.
One main aspect of Deep-a-wali is lightning of Lamps. It may be with Gee or any other oil or candles. For Puja Purposes lighting lamps with Ghee is good, but at the same time there is nothing wrong if oil is used. further Ghee is costly and everyone can not afford. In South India for ages only oil lamps are lit.

with the rise of prices & changing times where we are just following the traditions all this is becoming very symbolic. so if we can retain tradition at the same time keep a check on the expenses, its wonderful.
instead of lighting lamps using ghee we could donate that money towards the education of a needy child or towards the upkeep of the aged, am sure each individual would feel a sense of peace deep with in.
