Check vacuum supply to the heater controls. If there is no vacuum coming in, -it can not "switch" the air door over from a/c to heat. The a/c unit is supposed to run to dehumidify the hot air (so windows don't steam up so bad).

There are at least 10,000 people with vacuum problems, and they all just found out about it when it got cold enough to use the heater!

You can tell if the heater core is "passing" water through by feeling hose on both sides, it should be about the same temp.... If it is much colder on one side than the other, -it has a blockage of some sort (or the control valve is closed - also vacuum operated) You check water control valve the same way, (if it has one), - feeling temperature on both sides, they should be the same if it is turned on!

If the vacuum hose is broken or disconnected, it should make a sucking - or hissing kind of noise! You should be able to hear it inside the car, (and maybe under the hood too) if the engine is not too noisy!

first of all the ac compressor is supposed to come on in defrost. feel the inlet and out let hoses of the heater core if there is a major difference your heater core is probably plugged, pray it isnt this because in order to replace it your whole dash has to come out good luck.

i might propose checking the cooling followers for ideal operation. With the warmth on, the heater middle is appearing as a radiator. With the a/c on, the engine cooling followers run each and all of the time. If the low fan isn't working, the engine gets extremely warm previously the severe followers kick in. If the a/c is on, the device rigidity gets severe very rapidly with out low followers, and the severe followers will kick in, cooling the engine and dropping the a/c rigidity. thus, inoperative low followers could be my terrific wager. i wish this helps, and sturdy good fortune!
