It really depends on how hard you work at rehab, I came out of a cast in august and on sept 1st went on a walking holiday in scotland, start by making small circles with your foot in both directions, then work your way through writing the alphabet with your toes, little letters first and then capitals, only do as much as you can in one sitting, also get a towel and put it on the bottom of your foot to provide some resistance and point your toes forward while pulling gently with your towel, have someone else hold the towel while you point your toes towards you, it took about 6 weeks for me to walk comfortably without a pronounced limp and about 8 weeks to feel as though all of the range of motion is back. Good luck with the recovery.

To some degree it depends upon why you were immobilized to begin with but generally you can expect to gain your range of motion back within 3-4 weeks (6 weeks at the most) with appropriate stretching considering it is your ankle and it doesn't move as much as some of your larger joints. If you were not referred to physical therapy and the ankle motion is really restricted then you should ask for a referral and begin within the next few days. The physical therapist will show you all of the appropriate stretches for your ankle and what pitfalls to best avoid. You should also be attending therapy because as your ankle motion improves you will also need appropriate strengthening/stability exercises to help retrain the muscle and stabilize the joints until the ligaments are strong again.
