To avoid hypothermia (low body temperature) wear a winter coat, scarf and head cover when you expect to be outside in cold weather for an undetermined time (not a dash to the mailbox) because it can turn cold if the sun hides above a cloud or winds whip up increasing the effects of cold (wind chill) or you get stranded (even in a stalled car) when dark. You can always remove the scarf and unbutton the coat if too warm. Some sailors sail in the cold winter Atlantic by wearing layers of clothes (sweatshirts?) and will remain relatively warm even if dunked in cold water. Layers are good. Severe hypothermia is dangerous as it clouds judgment, slows down movement that generates heat and can stop a cold heart. Do as your neighbors do except you may be outside for different reasons and lengths of time. Enjoy the cold weather but avoid being outside when wind chill can freeze flesh. Wear warm boots and warm gloves too to be extra comfortable. Who knows, you may graduate to driving dog sleds. Mush!!!

Being your first real winter - your body will tell you what to wear and you will learn very quickly. Wear what you feel comfortable in, warmer is better and safer till you get in the groove. It is better to be find yourself over dressed in the winter than under dressed. Dress in layers, ie: sweater over a lighter top, that you could carry if your coat was too warm and so on. Always wear boots that will keep your feet warm - not sure where you are - because frost bite is nasty and can creep up on you.
Hope you have a fun winter - we miss winter fun now being into our second winter in Barbados and watch for snow at home.

When I feel cold I wear whatever is necessary to help me feel warm. When in a cold climate I keep a sweater, cap, and a jacket/coat close to me.
Remember your motor car will stop when you will not. Keep a spare of socks, cap, and some candy if stranded.
Keep head and feet warm & dry. A pair of sunglasses are not bad to have in cold climates for eye protection and vision.Take a good meal in the morning to aid body warmth. Swing your arms when walking. Wiggle your toes when standing.
Avoid alcohol as a warming agent.

Just walk outside, if you're cold, put on a jacket. But expect to have days when you need a jacket in the morning and not need it later in the day. The secret to dressing for cold weather is layering, especially if you are doing anything strenous. Many thinner layers are usually better than one thicker one. That way you can adjust the number of layers based on your comfort.

Best bet is to bring a coat if it might be cold. Just like you would if the weather called for a chance of showers.
