MS DOS stands for Microsoft Disk Operating System as was the earliest form of operating system before Windows. It was a collection of tools for using the computer from a prompt unlike Windows.
Command Prompt is a shell that runs within Windoes and looks for all intents and purposes the same as DOS did, and provides DOS related commands such as directory navigation, file copy and so fourth.

MS-DOS was the operating system for most computers before Windows came along. Because there are functions that are still easier or best to do in an MS-DOS like environment (command line rather than GUI), Windows includes the Command Prompt and a limited number of the old DOS functions.
Basically, MS-DOS ran by itself. The Command Prompt is a DOS like shell within Windows.

MS DOS is a operation system just like Windows, and the way you use mouse to interact with windows you use command prompt to interact with MS DOS. i.e runing a program on MS DOS will be done through command prompt like c:\> game.exe and press return key where on windows you will double or single click the games progam icon.
Hope that helps.

As you probably know, MS-DOS was the predecessor to Windows. It was character mode only, and you ran programs by typing their name at the command prompt. MS-DOS was created when 16 bit processors were becoming popular, and its widespread adoption is credited with kick starting the rise in popularity of the personal computer.
Then two things happened: Windows, and 32 bit processors. Fast forward to today, and MS-DOS has pretty much disappeared from the landscape - Windows, and its rich graphical interface, is everywhere. The same is true for the 16bit processor. Most all contemporary machines are built.
