I have just been brought a acoustic bass, please can anyone tell me the perpose of the alan key that came with it? i can see there is a fitting in the neck, but am stumped as to its perpose, i can only asume it has something to do with re stringing. Is it ok to use the bass straight away? I have tuned it but am worried, dont whant to ruin it. Would be really glad of help on this one, as obviously keen to get playing, well learning!!

The allan key will be to adjust the truss rod in the neck.

If you don't know anything about it, don't even think about trying to do this.

Your Bass should be set up properly already, and not need the truss rod adjusting. This is only usually needed if you change to a very different guage of strings, or the bass is damaged.

Once the instrument is acclimatised to the room temperature, which takes about an hour, tune it and play, without worries. You may find that you have to retune quite frequently at first. Don't worry, this is quite normal, and once everything settles down and beds in you will find it keeps in tune for longer periods.

I hope you enjoy your new instrument.

Leave the bass as it is for now & play it in. Playing in can take 3 weeks or so provided the guitar's played everyday.

The allen key is for adjusting the truss rod which governs the profile & playability of the insrtrument. Best not to fiddle with. If the bass needs adjustment after playing in, maybe the action is too high/low or there's string buzz at some point(s), then perhaps take it to a shop or someone experienced in setting up guitars/basses.

Above all don't worry, enjoy!

Clarify: do you mean an upright bass or an acoustic bass guitar?

its for the truss rod - dont touch it unless you know what your doing or you could bend the neck (which is bad)
