Any US president would have retaliated; and any other President would have gone directly after the culprits, Bin Laden and his then small band of Al Qaeda extremists.
I say this with some confidence because that's the method that had been used prior to Bush, and that's the method the British, the Egyptians, the Italians, the French and other nations subject to terrorism have used and still use. It's a police and intelligence agency matter and the terrorists are prosecuted under the existing criminals laws of the nations.
World sympathy was on our side after 9-11. Many middle east countries would have cooperated with the US to capture terrorists who wanted to strike the US. Why? They were a common enemy. Extremist groups such as Al Qaeda try to violently subvert legitimate governments in the middle east and elsewhere.
With this narrow focus and with international cooperation, we would have killed or captured Bin Laden and most of Al Qaeda long ago. Perhaps we would have taken down the Taliban as part of the operation, and occupied the country as part of a UN peacekeeping force for a few years to stabilize it. While there, the US could have routed the remaining Al Qaeda and Taliban.

No, Osama Bin Ladin stated after Somalia (Black Hawk Down) that, that was proof that all you had to do was kill a few Americans and they would run. It is that thought that gave them the courage to attack us. Read what amounts to their mission statement. The destruction of Israel and the WORLD WIDE conversion of all people to their strict version of Islam. Why do you think they are attacking the Shiites and Sunnis so hard. They do not want a Government of choice where the people have the right to chose. They are attacking countries all over the world. We were not in Afghanistan when 911 happened were we? What has Spain done to them? they have killed hundreds of people in Spain with the train bombings. They are rioting in the streets of France. Attacking the government in Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia, and Africa. They are not in Iraq. The sad fact is either the world stops them or they will continue to attack the world. And do not believe that it is only Christians they hate. The worst thing to them are Atheist's! Being an Atheist is immediate execution in the world.

retaliate against whom?
it is obvious there is no such thing as (al qaeeda) as far as an organisation, here are some arguements for that
1.every time the bush regime and rep. party need to play up the anti-terror card whether it be in elections or war decisions, heads of the so-called alqaeeda loyally make a tape or blow up someone in a pathetic theatrical way.
2. although the guilt for 911 was unanimously assigned to this (alqaeeda) there is no definition or limitations to what alqaeeda is , so in the name of retaliation first afghanistan, then iraq, then americans own civil liberties where targeted , so just who is the enemy?
3.alqaeeda has been used as an excuse to indulge and play on the racist feelings of the ignorant masses against islam , while the real enemy of the citizens is really working from within.
4.the well documented association with the cia during the soviet invasion of afghanistan makes it hard to believe such an organisation if it could be called that would be willing or able to turn on its former masters.
5.the battles in iraq have nothing to do whatsoever with alqaeeda, and inspite of that the government deliberatly mixes up issues when it states that it is fighting in iraq to increase the security threatened by 911 while iraq then was a sovereign state and had nothing to do with that, why all the misdirection if they are tlling the truth?
6.on many occasions british secret servicemen have been caught disguised as iraqi insurgents and large amounts of explosives were found on them, although many such incidents occured , the media hushes them up ,even arab media(which are all under the censorship of us)
this is very significant especially since to most arabs the identity of the suicide bombers and their motives remain mystery , because no arab muslim would kill so many people of his own kind and religion, and besides, the problem was saddam and he is long gone,so why all the bombings? its obvious to me that the united states being interested in perpetuating its military presence in the region is the most likely culprit behind these continued bombings of iraqi people.

It's funny how as a self proclaimed Christian nation, the U.S has never taken the example of the very person they say they follow. Whenever they get slapped, they punch back, while preaching about "Turn the other cheek" in church every Sunday.
I'm not saying that Christians are obligated to be pacifist all the time, but it is remarkable that America has never tried the path of "love, thy enemy" It's always been, "Bomb them to hell!"
And yet, history shows us what a peaceful approach can do to extinguish the fires of hatred.
They attacked us! Why? They feel hurt by us in some way! Listen to them! Find out what it is they want from us! Give it to them if possible! Don't put ridiculous words into their mouths like Bush has done right from the start, with statements like, "They are jealous of us...blah blah blah.."
What a load of bollocks!!
Why is it that the most religious, leaders are the least likely to practise what they preach??
All of us here on this tiny planet are one!! One family! No amount of disagreement within a family should be able to divide it!!

What they want is for the US to stop supporting Israel. So had there been no retailiation after 9/11, it would be not be so different, at least not in the US. Maybe there would have been one or two more major terrorist attacks. But if the US ever did pull support from Israel...it would be nuclear war in the middle east. Do the extremists think allah will protect them? They must be mad.

The Americans should have focused on Al Qaeda and finishing the job in Afghanistan rather than attacking an unrelated country (Iraq)
