Also would it be less expensive to fix or buy a new one?

Hello Molly: Most newer dryers are hard to repair, mostly due to their design and, I started turning people down years ago. If you can find a handyman that can guarantee you he can repair your dryer go ahead. You may want to ask him for references first.

I would venture a guess at around 75 to a hundred dollars to put in a new element if it's electric and roughly the same for a new thermal couple if it's gas. Other than these two problems, it might cost quite a bit. If it's an older dryer, toss it and get a rebuilt second hand if cash is short.

On the back of the dryer there will be a covered raised area possibly held down with screws. Undo these and underneath there will be two pulleys and a rubber belt or band. They can blow cold air out when these are broken. If it is replace and fit it yourself. Easy job. Dont buy a new one until you get it checked out.... but hopefully this helps you : )

It sounds like the heating element has failed. You could try making enquiries to a repair shop about prices - this would depend on make and age of the model and also the availability of components.

Weigh up the pros and cons and you may very well decide that it's time to buy a new dryer.

in the back of your dryer their is a heater element that looks like a long coiled up spring. you have only cold air because part of the heater element is broke. you can either take it in to a shop or pull the back of your dryer off (making sure it is unpluged) and take off the heater element cover. look over the element and find the break in the wire, then just twist the two wirers together.

i'd call sears or a repair guy and tell them the problem...your heating coil is probably shot...you'll have to get estimates to see which is less expensive...ours was around 150.00 or 200.00, but that was 5 or years ago.
