My favorite was "keep your mouth shut & your ears open". This was from a colleague in a blue collar job I worked while in college.
Another good example is an uneducated ex-trucker who ended up owning a very large chain of successful businesses. He explained to me the importance of taking risks, the fact that no amount of education will ever tell you what's going to happen in the future nor show you how to best position yourself. Basically his advice was work hard, treat others with respect, listen, and take big risks (manage your fear in order to start taking risks) but don't be stupid about it thinking you know more than the next guy.
I tended to totally ignore teachers & professors for any advice outside of their subjects/course materials. I found others are better teachers of "life experience" lessons, the stuff that really matters. All the academic info can simply be found in the pages of a book somewhere (or on the Internet now).

its good to listen to what everybody says. it depends on the person and what they have chosen as there career, for example a young single mum may say, i wish i had worked harder and had more money she may also say, i wouldn't change what i have for the world and be very happy with her life. it depends what type of Peron the add vise is for. it the person is a computer minded then something in that line of work if somebody prefers to get get there hands dirty and doesn't like a "class room base job" then something were they can be there own boss would be good. its hard to give advise and not to have any influence on it. i would tell them to do a load of cvs and offer a free week work experience and drop them into all the kinds off jobs they have ever wanted to to at least then they are getting a hands on advise for them self's and more likely to stick with there job, plus they may even be offered a job! bones for them then.

Sometimes the career path you have chosen and the degree that you have earned through college may not be suited for you, do whatever makes you happy to pursue one that satisfy whatever goals you have set and have changed along the way, making alot of money isnt always what people want

The best career advice I ever received came from a stage magician who is a friend of a friend.
He said, "If you're not following YOUR dream, then you're following someone else's."
Of course other people have said 'follow your dreams', but the way he worded it made it seem more like advice worth taking rather than some unattainable cliche.
