could be poor circulation. I've heard of this stuff called horse chestnut extract that can help people with edema(swollen legs) You might want to look into it. You can find it at most every health food store. If the woman is on prescription meds though, you might want to talk to a doctor first. Some herbs and meds don't mix well.

As you get older your heart doesn't pump as effectively. Unfortunately your legs are below your heart so in order to get the blood back up from them your calf muscle has to act as a pump. As you get older you don't use that pump as much, so a combination of the two tends to leave fluid pooling in the lower legs.

Swelling has two causes.

1. due to sugar (diabities)

2. due to weight of the body on legs.
