India had some glorious past and great riches at some periods of her history. But even then it is doubtful that all sections of the society had a good time.

Where India lost? Because of the caste system, there really was no unity among the people. This was manipulated by the British, the mugals and all those who invaded India. Even though British invade India with the pure motive of robbing her of her wealth, there is truth in the fact the British united India, they gave a common language, and gave means to study for the downtrodden sections of the society.

don't even try and blame England. If India was the richest country at the time English imperialism reached it then there would have been no problem stopping the English from conquering the Indian people. In fact English imperialization was probably the best thing to happen to India, unfortunately India forced them out and then all hell broke loose and now India is what it is, an impoverished nation that is suffering. If India was once the richest country in the world (which I sincerely doubt) then you will have to look deep into history books to find out what happened.
