mercury thermometer is used to measure body temp because:
1) it dooes no stick to the glass wall of the thermometer
2)it is quite sensitive to temp and rises with a rise in the body temp
3)it is shiny in appearence so it can be viewed easily while measuring the temp

Actually, Mercury thermometers are not used very much anymore (I haven't seen one for about five years now) because the Mercury is toxic, slippery and breaks into little beads if you try to clean it up, which makes hard to dispose of if the thermometer is broken.
