Artificial Intelligence is any program or part of program that is capable of substituting a human operator, to make decisions based on the situation it is facing. The most sophisticated of all AI can even "learn from experience", although AI designed to learn is quite rare.
AI is often used in robotics and gaming.
In robotic, AI is useful to create an AI that is self-capable, independent of human operator, which is especially useful in a field where quick-response is needed, but transmission of order might not reach the robot fast enough (like in interspace mission) or human operator would not be capable of making decision in time. Robot is not the AI itself, the AI resides on the robots' processing unit and the robot is controlled by AI, but the robot itself is not an AI.
In gaming, AI, sometimes known as bot, AI would play like human player play, wherever human player might not always be available.
